Insect resistant and herbicide tolerant corn MON 87427 x MON 89034 x MIR162 x NK603, generated by crossing the respective individual events (MON 87427, MON 89034, MIR162 and NK603) through classical genetic improvement and that express, respectively, the proteins of agronomic interest CP4 EPSPs (aroA:CP4 ); Cry1A.105 and Cry2Ab2; Vip3Aa20; CP4 EPSPs (aroA:CP4).

The two events linked to glyphosate resistance encode the same protein, therefore, synergistic or antagonistic effects between the events in terms of effects on human, animal and environmental health are not expected.

As for the events that confer resistance to insects, the encoded proteins are Cry1A.105 and Cry2Ab2 (MON 89034); Vip3Aa20 (MIR162). This binary combination of events has already been evaluated and considered safe by CTNBio and is present in at least four more complex events with commercial release approved by this technical committee: Bt11 × MIR162 × MON 89034 × GA21; Bt11 × MIR162 × MON 89034; MON 89034 × TC1507 × NK603 × MIR162; MON 87427 × MON 89034 × MIR162 × MON 87411. The four most complex events mentioned also have other toxins for insect control, and even so, they were considered safe for consumption and cultivation throughout the national territory.

The scientific information previously presented to CTNBio shows that there is no interaction between the exogenous proteins expressed in the combined product corn MON 87427 × MON 89034 × MIR162 × NK603, focusing on proteins derived from Bacillus thuringiensis that confer the characteristic of resistance to target pests of the crop of corn; There is a long history of safe use of the exogenous proteins in question, whether in genetically modified corn events, in combined corn products or even in other genetically modified crops that also express them; The exogenous proteins in the individual events that were combined to generate the product in question are encoded by genes from well-known and characterized organisms, with a long history of safe use, and which occur ubiquitously in nature, and exposure to them has been well studied over the 22 years of use of GMOs in the world; The studies previously presented to CTNBio for the approval of the individual events that make up the combined product in question and of products containing other combinations of these events show that they are as safe as their conventional versions for the environment and for human and animal health; Environmental and food biosafety studies that evaluated these individual events concluded that they are as safe as conventional corn, not only in Brazil, but also in other countries where these individual events are approved; By combining two or more genetically modified events by classical genetic improvement, a new genetic transformation event is not produced that would need to go through the entire risk assessment process again. The risk assessment guides for combined GMO products converge to the main premise of this discussion, that is, that there is no scientific evidence, based on the mechanisms of action, in the metabolic pathways and in the places where they occur, of interaction between proteins exogenous or of interest in products that have been combined by sexual crossing using classical genetic improvement techniques.
